The Association has three categories of members as given under Article I of the Association’s By-Laws reproduced here below.
ARTICLE I. MEMBERSHIP
Qualification for Membership
1 An applicant for individual membership of the Association shall be:
in practice as a Consulting Engineer either individually or as a bona fide partner in or bona fide director of or Consultant to or as a Resident Director of a firm of consulting engineers
AND registered as a Consulting Engineer with the Engineers’ Registration Board of Tanzania.
in practice as a Consulting Engineer for a period of not less than three years in another country in which the applicant is a member of an Association of consulting engineers who is a member of FIDIC; and registered by the Engineers Registration Board in the category of Consulting Engineer.
No person shall be qualified for membership of the Association if he shall:
be a director, employee, or partner in, or agent for a company or firm carrying on any commercial or manufacturing business dealing with the class of work to which his practice relates; or the holder in any such company or firm of shares or other financial interest either directly or indirectly likely to influence his exercise of independent professional judgement in matters upon which he advises,
be a director or employee of or agent for any company under¬taking engineering insurance work
be a partner or co-director in a practice in which other partners or co-directors are associated with (a) and/or (b) above and who hold a total of more than 15% shares.
No person shall be elected to membership of the Association unless, in the opinion of the Council, his standing and experience entitle him to practice as a Consulting Engineer.
184.108.40.206.1.1.1 Member Firm
A local consulting engineering firm may apply for membership upon registration with the Engineers Registration Board.
at least one of its directors, partners or proprietor is a member of the Association of Consulting Engineers Tanzania. the firm is registered officially with the Registrar of Companies and possesses a valid business licence.
A foreign consulting engineering firm operating in Tanzania may apply for membership if it shall have established an office and carried out consulting engineering practice in Tanzania for at least three years.
is a Member of an Association of Consulting Engineers affiliated to FIDIC in its country of origin. has posted an Engineer resident in Tanzania who in the opinion of the Council is professionally qualified as a Consulting Engineer and qualifies as an individual Affiliate or Associate member of the Association of Consulting Engineers Tanzania.
the firm is registered officially with the Registrar of Companies, Engineers Registration Board and possess a valid business licence
220.127.116.11.1.1.2 Affiliate Member
An Engineer may be admitted as an Individual Affiliate Member if he is resident and is engaged in the consulting engineering practice in Tanzania.
Qualifies for membership of the Association in all respects except that he is not a partner, Consultant or director in a firm of Con¬sulting Engineers at the date of nomination and is employed by a firm of which at least one bona fide partner or director is a member of the Association, and has held a senior executive, managerial or technical position in that firm for not less than three years.
A foreign firm of Consulting Engineers may be admitted as an Affiliate Firm Member if the firm is not resident but has been operating business of consulting engineering work in Tanzania provided that the said firm is a member of an Association of Consulting Engineers which is affiliated to FIDIC.
Each member firm of the Association, except an Affiliate Firm Member, may nominate one or more of its senior staff as Affiliate Members provided they qualify in terms of Byelaw 6 of this Article. However the Council may, in its absolute discretion accept or reject the application for Affiliate Membership of any Engineer so nominated.
The number of Affiliate Members shall at no time exceed twenty percent of the total number of Individual Members of the Association provided that no Affiliate Member shall be deprived of his membership if the number of Affiliate Members shall be raised above the permitted twenty percent by reason of a reduction in the total individual membership of the Association.
Membership of an Affiliate Member shall automatically cease if he ceases to be employed by a consulting engineering firm which is a member of ACET or an Association affiliated to FIDIC.
Affiliate Members shall be entitled to vote at General Meetings of the Association.
No Affiliate Member shall be eligible for the office of Chairman or Vice-Chairman.
Not more than two Affiliate Members may be elected to or co-opted to serve on the Council at the same time.
